Mt. Elgon is a vital montane forest and water-tower landscape that supports rivers, springs, and biodiversity within Mt. Elgon National Park and surrounding community lands. Communities depend on healthy forests, soils, and water for farming and livestock keeping.
Climate variability and ecosystem degradation can increase flood risk, landslides, soil erosion, and water stress. STK supports community-led conservation, restoration, and climate-smart practices to strengthen resilience and sustain livelihoods.

STK supports sustainable environmental management through conservation activities, community-led stewardship, and awareness to protect ecosystems for present and future generations.

Unsustainable land-use change and poorly planned water abstraction can reduce water availability, increase erosion, and degrade habitats across the Mt. Elgon ecosystem. STK supports community-led conservation and restoration to protect biodiversity and livelihoods.’s fishes and the productivity and composition of the lake’s fishery. Mt. Elgon ecosystem is home to over sixty fish species, ten of which are native to the lake. Nile tilapia and Nile perch are the lake’s most highly valued fishery species and, unlike in some other African lakes, are native to this system.

Large-scale developments can affect water availability, ecosystem health, and community livelihoods. STK advocates for responsible land and water governance and supports locally-led conservation solutions across the Mt. Elgon ecosystem.

Unsustainable land-use change and poorly planned water abstraction can reduce water availability, increase erosion, and degrade habitats across the Mt. Elgon ecosystem. We advocate for responsible land and water governance and support locally-led conservation solutions that protect both people and nature.

STK (Certified Public Benefit Organization - PBO), a grassroots organization founded in 2009, advocates for the rights of the Mt. Elgon ecosystem communities and works to protect and conserve Mt. Elgon ecosystem and its environment.1 They deliver training to local people and communities to investigate, expose, and combat environmental degradation and associated human rights abuses.
